This two session training will provide participants with school-wide strategies to decrease the stress and anxiety that has become an all too common background roar in schools. We will be looking at ways school leaders build deeper adult relationships to strengthen team work and mutual support. The training will take a close look at how principals model sharing their authority, and wielding their authority, to create predictability, one of the foundation stones of a calm and safe environment. We will examine the rituals and structures that diminish the most stressful elements of the daily school schedule and expectations. We will be talking theory and tools, big picture and nitty-gritty implementation.

The work shop is extremely interactive—no “death by power point.” There will be much sharing of stories and learned wisdom.  There will be laughter. The three session model will allow participants to experiment with interventions and report back to the group to gain insight and support to take next steps.

Learning and action outcomes include:

  • An understanding of how we got to this stressful time in modern American schools
  • Strategies to build relationships, adult voice, support, and predictability
  • How to build a force field to assess your school’s readiness for change
  • Practice with the four frames for building a sustained campaign to make change
  • Ways to know how much and when to share authority 
  • Developing specific plans to impact the most stressful parts of your school environment
  • Improving adult-to-adult communication around discipline and working with challenging students

Jeffrey Benson has over forty years of experience as a teacher, mentor, and school administrator. He focuses on supporting schools that work for all students. He’s had the incredibly good fortune of working with many talented people on school reform, conflict resolution, learning theory, trauma and addiction, school advisory programs, math education, staff development, leadership training, and curriculum development. He coaches principals and teachers, writes about education, and speaks at conferences—all in an effort to upload what he has learned in hopes others can make good use of it. Along that path, he continues to learn more. His books include, “Hanging In-- Strategies for Working with the Students Who Challenge Us Most;” “Ten Steps for Managing Change in Schools” and “Teaching the Whole Teen: Everyday Practices that Promote Success and Resilience in School and Life.” His website is, which includes links to his many articles, interviews, and services.
