Teachers21 President, John D’Auria will present:

“MANAGING CONFLICT: Transforming Difficult Conversations  Into Insight and Learning”

at the RIASP General Membership Meeting on May 31st

4:30pm - 6:30pm  - Imperial Room,

The Rhode Island Shriners

One Rhodes Place, Cranston, RI

School leaders encounter difficult conversations on a regular basis both as part of their work with individuals as well when they conduct meetings. When these difficult conversations are avoided or managed poorly by leaders, it can negatively impact school culture and contribute to weak supervision and evaluation practices. The underlying skills that enable leaders to manage conflict well and address difficult topics openly, honestly, and effectively are eminently learnable.  John D’Auria, President of Teachers21  and author of Ten Lessons in Leadership and Learning will facilitate this interactive workshop and introduce participants to two foundational skills that form the basis of a proficiency in handling difficult conversations:

1)   Building an empathetic bridge

2)   Demonstrating curiosity in the face of adversity and negativity

Additionally, participants will learn how leaders can shape the conditions within meetings that can foster respectful dialogue and disagreement and lead to deeper conversations about complex topics within our schools. While these skills have always been important, they have become even more vital as our nation struggles to foster dialogue among those who hold diverse perspectives.
