HIGH SCHOOL/MIDDLE SCHOOL NETWORK MEETING

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28th @

7:15AM - 9:00AM

NEIT - Room S330

Join in a Conversation with

Chief Innovation Officer, Richard Culatta

Computer science and coding education is more important than ever, and the
need for more robust STEM programming in Rhode Island schools - from K - 12

to college and career - is apparent. Rhode Island's IT industry is a leading
force in the State's economy, and STEM and IT jobs are our fastest growing
positions. We need to develop a workforce with the skills necessary to fill
these high - wage, high - growth jobs. All Rhode Island students should have
the opportunity to take computer science courses in high school. AP Computer
Science is currently offered in only 11 schools, and only two of Rhode
Island's 17 title one schools offer AP Computer Science to their students.
More than half of all Rhode Island high schools do not offer computer
science classes to their students.

As Rhode Island's first Chief Innovation Officer, Richard Culatta is working
to bring partners to the table to reach our goal of making computer science
available to all Rhode Island public high schools by SY 2017. RIASP is a
vital group to include in this conversation, and we are eager to work
together to develop a strategy for meeting our goals and better serving
Rhode Island students. At the forefront of these conversations is a vision
for greater equity in STEM and CS education. An effective vision must
acknowledge that one curriculum model may not be appropriate for all
schools, and Schools will choose different pathways to meet their individual
needs and goals.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO
